The Eugenia
This beautifully designed neo-Victorian mansion offers just twelve elegant suites in spaciously serene surroundings off Soi 31 in the heart of Bangkok. With its high level of personalised service and quirky ‘colonial fusion’ design, it is ideal for chic travellers wishing to be totally absorbed in the mysticism of the fabled east. The symmetrical facade of The Eugenia, its aged door and window frames, antique light fittings and old wooden flooring sourced from throughout Asia gives it a distinctive appearance that belies the fact that it was only built a few years ago. The Eugenia encompasses a variety of colonial architectural styles and is lavishly decorated with a huge variety of fascinating antiques personally acquired by the owner from his travels to India, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam and China.
The ground floor of the hotel houses the lobby, reception area, D.B. Bradley Dining Room, library and Zheng He Lounge while all twelve suites are located on the first and second floors. The design is decidedly retro with public areas outfitted with eclectic decor ranging from stuffed peacocks, crocodile skins, African hunting trophies and squashy leather sofas to cushioned daybeds and carved wooden furniture from British and French colonial Burma. The cosy library is an oasis of art, cuisine and design books peppered with magazines while the Zheng He Lounge attractively overlooks the palm-shaded courtyard, celadon-green swimming pool and teak Thai Sala (pergola).
The Eugenia exudes the elegance of a bygone era so that as soon as you enter through its doors you are whisked away into another era completely. The hustle and bustle of Bangkok seems like a world away even though you have it all on your doorstep. A bespoke tuk tuk, antique Jaguar or vintage Mercedes Benz shuttle guests around the city and to the airport to complete the opulent other-worldly and highly unique experience of The Eugenia.
