A long weekend in Thailand with friends
5 nights / 6 days
This 6 day short break adventure was put together for a group of friends who had never been to Thailand. Each chapter of the journey explores a different aspect of the country in a perfectly timed sequence of contrasting experiences. The plan was to de-stress for a day of two on arrival, do something a little active while exploring the northern hills, and end up with a bash in Bangkok. The brief was clear: “Avoid the tourist traps and show us the real Bangkok – we want to see it through the eyes of people who live here. Oh an add a little shopping…”
Here’s what they had to say about this trip…
“Our holiday in Thailand was unforgettable, perfectly-paced, exciting, and breathtaking...”
Highlights
+ Cruise down the River of Kings on a traditional rice barge.
+ Walking through rice paddies, jungles and remote hill-tribe villages.
+ Bangkok, shaken and stirred!
Day by day
Chapter 1. The River
Day 1
For centuries, The River of Kings has been the lifeblood of Thailand, carrying with it its history and culture. Flowing down from the fertile central plains for almost 400 kilometres, this birthplace of Thai civilization connects the ancient Siamese capital Ayuthaya with the modern capital Bangkok, where it remains an essential artery in the region's economic life.
In a one-day river trip on a traditional reconvertd rice barge you can absorb centuries of Thailand's history and culture cruising down the Chao Phraya River. The magic of this river jounrey is its unhurried pace that captures the subtle colours and moods of life on the river over a 24-hour period. The bustle of the city contrasts with the tranquillity of the countryside.
You flight gets in at 7.00am. On arrival at Bangkok International Airport you will be met by a friendly and informative guide and head north towards Ayutthaya, the ancient siamese capital. The drive from Bangkok Airport takes approximately 1.5 hours. Your guide will should around the most interesting sights. Enjoy a light lunch by the river and travel to the Pang-Pa-In Summer Palace for a short visit before boarding the Mekhala at 14.30hrs.
Just after the sunset, the boat docks at Wat Kai Tia, a Thai temple set in a tranquil rural village. An exquisite dinner of mouthwatering Thai cuisine is served on the deck. Overnight on board in your air-conditioned cabin.

In Chiang Mai we will meet you at the terminal building. You will travel north towards the Mae Taeng valley. The trip takes approximately 1.5 hrs from Chiang Mai Airport.
You will be staying in an award winning eco-lodge. There's a tranquil and soothing atmosphere surrounding the settlement that is staffed and managed by Lisu tribe. Built in traditional style, the lodges overlook the lush fields of the valley and serve as your base-camp for a blend of soft adventure and relaxation in the countryside of northern Thailand.
Spend the rest of the afternoon at your own leisure. Take a bike and explore the Lisu village and the surrounding area on your own or with one of the friendly guides or enjoy a herbal Thai massage. Dinner is served on the terrace.
Day 3
Hop onto the back of an open-air truck for a short drive to the area near Pha Mieng. We walking along the jungle trails to a remote village. Meet the inhabitants of this small hill tribe village in the jungle. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest.
After lunch, walk to the top of the mountain (1h30) where the Red Lahu Village of Pha Daeng is located. Continue walking along a mountain ridge to the Lahu village of Kup Kap (1h00),
from where you have a spectacular view overlooking the Mae Taeng district and Chiang Mai town glittering at night in the distance. Beyond the mountain peaks to the west lies Myanmar (Burma).
We overnight in a simple cottage-style accommodation in a Lahu hilltribe village. It is designed to give clients an experience of hilltribe life in conditions which are simple and basic, but as clean and comfortable as possible without distracting from the authenticity of the experience.
Day 4

There is plenty to do in Chiang Mai. We visit Studio Naenna to see a fine display of textile arts of South East Asia. This group, known as the Weavers for the Environment was initiated by Patricia Cheesman Naenna, an expert in antique, Lao and Thai textiles.
We visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (AD 1384), the most sacred temple in Northern Thailand. Inside the cloister of the temple you will see one of the most sacred stupas in all of Thailand. A panoramic view of the city is seen from here at 3500 feet above sea level.
We take you tonight to one of Chiang Mai's hottest eating venues. Our favorites are Mahanaga or trendy The House. After the dinner, jump into a tuk-tuk and head to Chiang Mai's famous night bazaar for a stroll among the colorful stalls.
We overnight in a boutique hotel located on the banks of the Mae Ping River in central Chiang Mai. Designed in modern contemporary Thai style around spacious courtyards, this hotel suites those wanting to stay in contemporary surroundings while visiting more traditional locations.
