Long Tails and Tuk Tuks
"There is an excellent path to Chiang Mai which elephants can follow, arriving there in nine marches." An Englishman's Siamese Journal 1890.
Paths may have been replaced by highways and elephants by coaches and limousines, but transportation in Thailand is excellent.
The sky train has even un-gridlocked Bangkok's "perfect bedlam" making long tail boats and tuk tuk trishaws no longer the sole means of a quick ride about town. The country now has a seamless network of transport possibilities which means getting to your destination is a joy when compared to other Asian countries.
Highways have transformed travel between the main cities and domestic air routes have mushroomed providing a very affordable and quick method of travelling between provinces. Private air charters further enhance the journey.
Rice barges, elephants, junks, luxury trains, and hot air balloons add an exhilarating memory to those who want to travel in the slow lane. |
